Ohio Trip - Quilting Arts TV & Mission of Love *PIC*
Posted By: Luana Rubin The last few days have been quite remarkable, and I toured the Mission of Love warehouse in Ohio full of medical supplies, building supplies, and other relief items stored here - another huge container being shipped out to Haiti this week.
Friday night I personally handed over 4 quilts (3 made by Sophie, me and eQuilter staff) to a young man whose brother is in Haiti establishing an orphanage. They will be carried in a suitcase this week and hand-delivered to the children. As larger quantities of quilts arrive they will be shipped in containers to Haiti, and personally distributed to the children most in need. I will have photos of some of these children to post in the next few days.
If you are wanting to help Chilean earthquake victims, we know that our trusted charity recipients Doctors Without Borders and SOS Children are on the ground and making a difference right now.
Friday night I had dinner with 2 plastic surgeons who are joining forces with Mission of Love to do cleft palate repairs in Guatemala, and reconstructive surgeries in Ghana. One is a retired doc who was born in Yemen and has already done many service trips with MOL, and the other was born in Ghana and came to the US as a student - and came to dinner Friday after 12 hours of surgery.
To sit the table and hear them talk about the service trips they have made around the world to help those who cannot pay for these surgeries was really an experience...and of course the money we have given to this organization (over $140K so far) has been the foundation over the years that has allowed them to expand their reach globally.
MOL director Kathy Price and her husband/partner Bob Price hosted the dinner - and were delighted to bring together donors and doctors.
The other remarkable part about this trip was - Sophie and I both filmed segments for Quilting Arts TV! Sophie had her own segment with host Pokey Bolton, and actually sewed on her little Bernina on camera! You should have seen all of us in the green room watching the monitor and giggling. I did a segment on - what else? - choosing fabrics and colors!
This weekend's trip was the perfect way to start our Anniversary Week, and I am just filled with gratitude that we've been able to offer this service to our friends and customers worldwide, and make such a huge difference to so many relief and charity organizations.
With your help, we have raised over $750,000 for charity, and now we've got our eye on the goal of raising a million dollars.
Thank you for your support, your friendship, and your business. We are truly blessed to be part of this industry, and to share our vision with so many wonderful creative quilters and artists.
I am flying to Vegas early tomorrow morning to attend the Intl Textile Show, and then I'll have a couple weeks to get caught up on all my emails and projects.
I loved Sandra Bullock's comments tonight as she won the Best Actress award - thanking all the mothers who take care of children and babies no matter where they come from. (meaning foster and adoptive mothers - re The Blind Side) I don't remember her words exactly, but I felt she was speaking to all of us who care about the abandoned children of the world, and then try to do something about those kids' situation.
